An industrial manipulator arm is a mechanical or pneumatic device designed to assist operators in lifting, moving, orienting, and placing loads along a production line or workstation. Unlike fully automated robotic systems, manipulators work with the operator: they extend human capability rather than replace it. The operator guides the movement; the machine handles the weight.

Where a robotic system requires fixed programming and structured workflows, a manipulator adapts in real time to the operator's decisions: a different grip, a rotated component, a load placed millimetres off the expected position.
