What is a sheet metal suction lifter?
A sheet metal lifter is an industrial handling system designed to lift, move and position metal sheets in a controlled and repeatable manner. Unlike simple lifting equipment, it allows the operator to manage not only the weight of the load, but also its orientation, stability and final placement throughout the entire handling cycle.
By combining a balancing manipulator with dedicated gripping technologies - such as vacuum suction cups or magnetic systems - a sheet metal lifter ensures precise control of large, thin or heavy sheets while reducing manual effort and improving overall safety.
Sheet metal handling challenges
Metal sheets present unique handling difficulties that standard lifting devices cannot fully address. Their geometry and behaviour require systems capable of controlling movement, not just lifting weight.
Large surfaces and unstable geometry
Wide and thin sheets tend to flex, oscillate and rotate during lifting. Without proper stabilisation, this leads to imprecise positioning, damaged parts and unsafe conditions. RHS sheet metal lifters are designed to keep the sheet under constant control throughout the entire movement.

Surface protection and edge safety
Scratches, dents and deformation compromise downstream processes and final quality. RHS gripping systems distribute forces evenly, reducing point loads and protecting both surfaces and edges.
Precision during positioning
Sheet metal handling often requires accurate placement onto laser tables, press brakes or fixtures. Controlled tilt, rotation and micro-adjustments are essential for efficient and repeatable operations.

This is the most commonly used system for lifting metal sheets with an RHS suction lifter.
Suction cup frames lift sheets directly from pallets and rotate them vertically or to the desired position, with an integrated joystick in the handle that lets the operator control rotation and tilt throughout the cycle.
Tooling can be modular or adjustable, so one suction lifter can handle different sheet formats and production batches without compromising performance. For perforated sheets or laser-cut geometries where vacuum contact is interrupted, magnetic gripping is the alternative - effective only with mild steel.

Our manipulators
RHS develops custom industrial manipulators that function as sheet metal suction lifters, designed to match specific loads, layouts and production cycles. Each system is engineered as a complete handling solution - combining structure, balancing system and gripping technology.
Floor-mounted or self-standing column manipulators handle components with an off-center center of gravity - common when a suction frame is loaded asymmetrically. Pneumatic parking brakes keep the arm static when not moving, useful when an operator needs both hands free to check sheet alignment before releasing the vacuum.
The suspension system of fixed suspended manipulators adapts to existing structures or installs as a standalone unit, keeping the floor area clear beneath - useful where space is at a premium. It pairs with the same suction tooling used on floor-mounted systems.

Sliding ceiling manipulators translate along rails, manually or with the assistance of a pneumatic motor, so a single suction lifter can serve multiple workstations along a production line - reducing the number of systems a plant needs to install.
